Our attorneys secured a unanimous defense verdict in a medical malpractice case against an ICU physician. The plaintiff presented to the ICU with critically low sodium levels (hyponatremia). While hospitalized, the plaintiff’s sodium levels corrected too quickly, resulting in osmotic demyelination syndrome.
The plaintiff alleged that the defendant physician was negligent in failing to maintain sodium levels within a specified range and in not monitoring blood sodium levels frequently enough.
During the three-day trial, the defense team demonstrated that the physician’s treatment plan met the standard of care and that the rise in sodium causing the plaintiff’s condition occurred after care had been transferred to another ICU doctor.
The twelve-member jury returned a unanimous no negligence verdict after brief deliberations.
