Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our firm continuously seeks to cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment that empowers our attorneys and team members to be successful both personally and professionally. This diversity of experience and commitment to inclusiveness within our firm has made us stronger.

Baker Sterchi’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts have grown to include not only internal development opportunities, but also extend beyond the walls of our firm into the legal community and the community at large.

Baker Sterchi Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee at Baker Sterchi comprises individuals with differing perspectives, seeking to represent every employee group in the firm, from owners and managers to attorneys and other team members.

We have and continue to build upon a diversity, equity, and inclusion program that aims to have a positive impact long before an attorney or other team member joins our firm. Those who join Baker Sterchi are introduced to our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion from their initial introduction to the firm, starting as early as law school, and continuing through their tenure with us.

Recruiting

Our firm actively supports and participates in events that promote diversity within the legal profession. This includes participating in legal job fairs, engaging in networking, and offering mentorship to area law schools. Additionally, our commitment extends to a summer clerkship program that actively recruits candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Retention

We take pride in actively encouraging all attorneys and team members to build their careers with our firm. We do this by proactively engaging our attorneys and team members to ensure they find their work rewarding and feel fully included in the life of the firm. Additionally, we are dedicated to fostering the growth of our attorneys through in-house training and mentorship programs.  These initiatives are designed to help attorneys develop their skills, build their practices, network with other attorneys, and create pathways to advance as far as they desire in their careers.

Education

Our firm has embraced the American Bar Association’s Resolution 113, which sets the bar for creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive law firm. This commitment reflects our commitment to hold ourselves to the highest standards when it comes to being intentional in our efforts. As an extension of this commitment, employees of our firm have participated in implicit bias training, which has helped further our understanding of the ways in which unconscious biases affect our relationships and work with colleagues.

A Commitment that Extends Beyond the Walls of Our Firm

The success of our firm’s efforts can be attributed to our team’s active interest in making certain the firm reflects the values most important to us. Whether it’s an attorney serving on a bar association committee or other team member dedicating time to support a nonprofit organization, Baker Sterchi is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion that extends beyond the walls of our firm.

Organizational Involvement

Our firm has a long history of involvement in the Heartland Community Job Fair and membership in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). In particular, the LCLD, composed of more than 300 corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners, is devoted to creating a truly diverse U.S. legal profession. Our firm has been a proud member of the LCLD since its inception in 2009, with several members accepted into its fellows’ program.

Additionally, our firm actively supports various diversity-related events organized by both international and national organizations. These include the ALFA International Women’s Initiative, the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys' Women of the ADTA Committee, FDCC’s Professional Women’s Forum Committee, and DRI’s Women in the Law Committee. We also collaborate with local and state bar associations, such as the Hispanic Bar Association of Greater Kansas City, the Illinois Defense Counsel Diversity Committee, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Diversity Committee, the Association of Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City, The Jackson County Bar Association, the Missouri Asian American Bar Association, the Mound City Bar Association, and the Women Lawyer’s Association of Greater St. Louis, among others. Many of our attorneys hold leadership roles or actively participate in these associations.

Community Involvement

Our firm has extended its diversity-related efforts in a manner that is not limited to impacting our own employees, but also aims to impact the broader community.

An example of this can be found in our involvement with important community partners like Garfield Elementary School in Kansas City and East St. Louis School District 189, schools with diverse student bodies, where our firm regularly donates school supplies, books, snacks, coats and winter weather accessories, and more. Our commitment to these partners extends to reading programs where our employees volunteer weekly to encourage youth in the community to reach their full potential.

Another example of this can be found in the involvement of our firm in the funding and organization of the construction of the Freedom Suits Memorial in downtown St. Louis, honoring courageous slave plaintiffs who sued for their freedom in the decades leading up to the war, the most famous of whom were Harriet and Dred Scott. After years of work to bring the memorial to fruition, an unveiling ceremony took place in the Summer of 2022.

“In my role as chair for the Freedom Suits Memorial Steering Committee, I worked hard to help make the memorial a reality because I believe it can have an impact on St. Louisans and visitors to our city and provide people a starting point for learning more about the plight of Blacks in America, not only in the decades leading up to the Civil War but also today. I hope those visiting the memorial will be aided on the arc of learning, understanding, respecting, and honoring, these courageous freedom suit litigants, and most notably the plaintiffs.”

Similar examples like this are present throughout our firm with team member engagement in organizations throughout the community – civic, professional, and nonprofit – that focus on encouraging diversity in our lives.
