Leading the Way Forward, In and Out of the Courtroom
Great businesses deserve great legal representation. At Baker Sterchi Cowden & Rice LLC (Baker Sterchi), we are dedicated to achieving your vision of greatness by first listening carefully to understand it. We are focused on creating pathways to solutions that make sense and add value. Nationally recognized in defense litigation, Baker Sterchi has a case and trial history rivaling that of larger firms and we regularly serve as national coordinating or lead trial counsel in important cases.
Midwestern Roots. National Reach. An Upward Trajectory.
Centrally located in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas, our attorneys practice throughout the United States serving national, regional, and local businesses and professionals in a variety of industries and businesses. Our ranks have burgeoned in response to client needs, from four lawyers in 1982 to more than 70 today.
Our litigation practice is exceptionally broad, and we have represented local and regional companies as well as global conglomerates in claims ranging from routine to complex. Notable for a firm our size is our prominence in multidistrict litigation, class actions, and appeals. Baker Sterchi has served as national and regional counsel in federal multidistrict litigation and state coordinated proceedings; additionally, we have been tapped by the Defense Research Institute, Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers, and the Product Liability Advisory Council to prepare amicus briefs in closely watched high-stakes appellate cases.
Our attorneys are actively involved with and leaders of prominent professional legal organizations and networks such as the ALFA International, American Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates, American College of Trial Lawyers, Defense Research Institute, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, International Association of Defense Counsel, Lawyers for Civil Justice, and Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. We have served in leadership roles for organizations that educate corporate counsels and industry representatives on issues critical to a variety of substantive practice areas.
Defending Your Interests.
Baker Sterchi’s client-centric, effective approach to litigation is built on foundational elements.
We are trial lawyers: A big differentiator for Baker Sterchi among Midwest law firms is our trial experience. Collectively, the Baker Sterchi team of attorneys has tried more than 1,000 cases in state and federal courts across the country. Our reputation for prowess in trial works to our clients’ advantage.
We adhere to early case assessment: A detailed approach to uncovering the facts, even before a case is filed, underpins our case assessments. Whether rushing to the scene of a trucking company client’s accident or going to the site of an explosion for a propane industry client, we gather evidence at once and communicate it. Clients aren’t kept waiting unnecessarily for information that could affect the outcome of their case.
We cultivate relationship with clients and experts: We are well versed in the substantive areas in which we practice and, in the industries, and businesses we serve. This comes from years of experience and the long-term relationships we have developed with our clients and experts in various fields. Medical experts continuously inform us on issues like epidemiology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. Experts in crash reconstruction, aeronautics, metallurgy, and engine design instruct us on issues related to airplane crashes or trucking accidents. Chemical experts guide attorneys in our toxic tort, mass tort, and environmental practice groups.
We understand the playing field: We often navigate the maze of local, state, and federal regulations by which so many our clients must abide. Baker Sterchi attorneys are well acquainted with new or proposed rules, whether related to the Dodd-Frank Act, OSHA, CPSC, FMCSA, or another rule.
We use technology as well as common sense: We actively seek out and embrace new technologies in the practice of law that promote greater efficiency for our clients, attorneys and staff. More significantly, we utilize technology to tell our clients’ stories in compelling ways. Our predominance at trial also stems from our understanding of human nature and our ability to communicate with and relate to juries and courts.
We win even when settling: From day one, we proceed as if a case is going to trial—even though many cases settle. Why? Diligent research and analysis put clients in the best possible position to present a case at trial or negotiate on their terms. At the end of the day, our reputation as formidable lawyers unafraid to go to trial acts as an advantage at the negotiating table.
Leading the Way Forward in Our Communities
As a business leader, Baker Sterchi is a strong partner in the community. Our attorneys and staff members engage in diversity efforts such as attorney pipeline programs, job fairs, and DEI organizations. We support education initiatives at all levels. We network with and offer mentorship to area law school students. Attorneys and staff volunteer in reading programs weekly and we donate school supplies, books, snacks, coats, and more to schools in our communities. Our commitment also spurs us to provide pro-bono legal services to those in need. These are just a few of the ways in which we strive to give back to our neighbors in spirit.
