Lee Hurwitz

Lee Hurwitz concentrates his practice on toxic tort, product liability, premises liability and trucking matters. He has extensive experience handling insurance defense cases involving personal injury and subrogation claims and has prepared numerous cases for jury trial, serving as solo lead counsel in nearly a dozen verdicts.

Lee develops creative strategies to address complex legal issues and takes an assertive approach to oral and written discovery to secure early, favorable outcomes for his clients. He also collaborates closely with national counsel, insurance carriers, adjusters and managers to coordinate litigation strategy.

He earned his J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law and holds dual B.A.s in journalism and political science from Indiana University, where he participated in the Little 500, the nation’s largest collegiate bike race. Prior to joining Baker Sterchi, he was a shareholder at a defense litigation firm in Chicago.

Lee lives in Chicago with his wife and son. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with family, golfing, cycling and cheering on Boston sports teams and the Indiana Hoosiers.

Representative Experience:

  • Secured summary judgment in a negligence case where the court found the alleged incident occurred in a common area under the landlord’s exclusive control, relieving the defendant of any duty of care.
  • Served as first chair securing favorable defense verdicts in nine separate transportation jury trials in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.
  • Secured a favorable settlement for a medical device manufacturer in a multimillion-dollar claim filed in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. Defense highlights included producing key fact witnesses for deposition, retaining critical expert witnesses and successfully arguing a motion to compel the plaintiff to produce electronically stored information from his devices.
  • Conducted hundreds of fact and expert witness depositions in toxic tort, transportation, life sciences and construction matters.
  • Secured a favorable settlement after arguing a motion in limine before trial in a transportation case in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.
  • Assisted with the defense of a multimillion-dollar bench trial in Los Angeles County involving an admitted -iability transportation accident in which the plaintiff underwent a below-the- knee amputation.
  • Successfully represented multiple clients pro bono, including handling the re-sentencing hearing of an individual sentenced to life without parole after being convicted as a minor.
